Anthony Loeff medical volunteer is reporting software for people who are blind

July 31st, 2008

More and more, screen readers are being bundled with operating system distributions. There are also open source screen readers, such as the Linux Screen Reader for GNOME and NonVisual Desktop Access for Windows.

The Macintosh OS also comes with a built-in screen reader, called VoiceOver. Approximately 19 percent of those deemed legally blind, by any measure, have no vision. While Apple Mac OS X includes VoiceOver, a more feature-rich screen reader. Comming season Anthony Loeff nonprofit worker is testing software applications for people suffering from blindness Screen readers are a form of assistive technology potentially useful to people who are blind, visually impaired, or learning disabled, often in combination with other AT such as screen magnifiers. Recent versions of Microsoft Windows come with the rather basic Narrator. The open source GNOME desktop environment long included Gnopernicus and now includes Orca. Web browsers, word processors, icons and windows and email programs are just some of the applications used successfully by screen reader users. This interpretation is then represented to the user with text-to-speech, sound icons, or a braille output.

Only a small fraction of this population, when compared to the sighted community, have Internet access.

The console-based Oralux Linux distribution ships with three screen-reading environments: Emacspeak, Yasr and Speakup. Linux distributions for the blind include Oralux and Adriane Knoppix. Experimental approaches in sensory substitution are beginning to provide access to arbitrary live views from a camera.

The rest have some vision, from light perception alone to relatively good acuity. A persons choice of screen reader is dictated by many factors, including platform and the role of organizations like charities, schools, and employers.

The latter developed in part by Knopper who has a visual impairment. Later versions of Microsoft Windows include an Accessibility Wizard and Magnifier for those with partial vision, and Microsoft Narrator, a simple screen reader.

The primary audience for such applications is those who have difficulty reading because of learning disabilities or language barriers. However, using a screen reader is, according to some users, considerably more difficult than using a GUI and many applications have specific problems resulting from the nature of the application. Indeed functionality remains limited compared to equivalent desktop applications, the major benefit is to increase the accessibility of said websites. The movement towards greater web accessibility is opening a far wider number of websites to adaptive technology, making the web a more inviting place for visually impaired surfers. Access technology such as screen readers and Screen magnifiers enable the blind to use mainstream computer applications. A screen reader is a software application that attempts to identify and interpret what is being displayed on the screen. Screen reader choice is contentious: differing priorities and strong preferences are common. Screen readers can be assumed to be able to access all display content that is not intrinsically inaccessible.

Most legally blind people 68 percent do not use computers.

1031 Exchange Rule

July 31st, 2008

Most of the people want to use tax deferred methods in order to avoid paying taxes, 1031 Exchange is thus one of the most talked about and popular ways by which exchange of real estate and property is possible without paying taxes. The 1031 Exchange is based on simple rule that any exchange to be done should be qualified as to be exchanged in the law.

For any person looking for an exchange of property then the Relinquished Property must be qualifying property to be qualified for this. The property that can be Qualified include property (or equipment) held for investment purposes or used in a taxpayer’s trade or business. It doesn’t involve any personal property or any property (or equipment) including Land under development for resale, Construction or fix/flips for resale, Property purchased for resale, Inventory property, Corporation common stock, Bonds, Notes and Partnership interests and hence deals with a very selective property qualifying as the 1031 Exchange.

When the Exchange 1031 talks about the Investment property it includes all sorts of real estate, improved or unimproved that have been held for the investment or income producing purposes as part of the business or any side income. Similarly when we talk about the trade and business property then it includes al the offices or place of doing business, as well as equipment used in his trade or business. But all these real estate and property have to be replaced with like-kind real estate. Equipment must be replaced with like-kind equipment.

Because of all these restrictions and rules, 1031 Exchange has a lot of value for anyone who is looking for deferral strategies to avoid paying tax against the exchange of property and other stuff. Most of the people worry about paying income taxes when they sell or buy a property but with the helps of 1031 tax exchange they never have to pay income taxes on the sale of property if they intend to reinvest the proceeds in similar or like-kind property.

The exchange 1031 also involves much more rules when we talk about the real estate in general, e.g. the ownership title remains unchanged even after the exchange, i.e., if two persons are owning the property or real estate jointly then the exchanged property will be the ownership of both not held singly. Similarly it goes with the organizations and corporate as the ownership will remain with the same name as the property/real estate has been changed.

If there is any monetary gain or the Boot in the exchange then that Boot is taxable. Most of the time, people use the boot in order to pay the debt, their taxes and much more stuff like that. But keeping in view the terms & conditions, the boot can be avoided completely and the transaction can be done completely tax-free. Most of the lawyers and people dealing with the Exchange 1031 tell a basic rule of thumb regarding boot and that is when you sell your property, the replacement property must equal or be greater than the value and existing debt of the property being sold, and all of your equity from the property you are selling must go into acquiring the replacement property. They advice never to “trade down” as it results in boot received, either cash, debt reduction or both.

The Secrets To Finding The Right Online School

July 28th, 2008

Do you want to complete and online degree?

Obtaining a degree online can seem like a dream come true. You can improve your education (and chances for a better job), while learning from the comfort of your home.

But how do you know what program or university is right for you?

Picking the best Internet university may seem like a daunting task, but in truth it can be broken down into a few easy steps. Let’s get started…

Like the standard college or university, an online degree has a high level of standard. So the first step is to ensure that you meet the academic requirements. To do this, you must see if you can match or exceed the minimum GPA, courses taken and a high enough score from the appropriate standardized test.

The next step is to look for a school that is accredited from a recognized educational body. Most of the time, it will be obvious if an online university has an accreditation. This is because the online degree course will be part of a well-known institutional body. To help you out the Department of Education has six different accrediting bodies that you can use to research your potential school.

Thirdly, you should check out the degree program that you will be focusing on. You need to find out if this particular program is right for you. So talk to your prospective professors, check out their educational background, and ask to talk to current students. Also find out what some of the alumni are doing, and if their lives were enriched by receiving their online degree. By doing this, you are getting an idea of how the online college operates.

The final factor is if you can afford to take an online course. Some of the costs include tuition, books, special online fees and admin costs. Sometimes, you can end up spending more then you would at your standard university. So it is important to analyze your finances and see if you can afford to pay these fees.

By paying attention to these factors, you will find it easy to avoid the prevalence of so-called diploma mills. You will receive a degree that both you and your employer will be proud of.

OJT – On The Job Training

July 25th, 2008

Introduction

Managers have two powerful ways of improving the performance and productivity of their subordinates, which are counseling and on the job training.

Counseling is the process of helping a subordinate define and resolve personal problems that effect performance or in order to develop a good attitude to work.

On the job training is the process of explaining, demonstrating and the structured supervision of specific skills or particular tasks. It is similar to the teaching process. On the job training is often referred to as OJT.

These are highly effective in three situations, which are:

Resolving people problems

All managers are faced with problem people from time to time. Counseling and training are always the first considerations in these cases but they do not always result in success and sometimes more radical action is required. This is covered in the Problem People and Positive Discipline modules.

Maintaining group standards

The management of people both as individuals and groups is a dynamic process as nothing remains static – problems are always arising. A good manager must be aware of this and be constantly ready to use counseling and training to maintain standards.

To achieve continuous improvement

The best way to avoid problems is to keep ahead of them by being proactive. You must have a plan for each individual in your group and for the group as a whole. In particular new and inexperienced group members need special treatment so that they can meet required levels of performance.

Counseling and training share many of the same skills and in many cases they are used together to achieve your results.

The following are typical signs of change to look for then you must decide to initiate the counseling or training (or both) initiatives.

TYPICAL SIGNS OF NEED FOR HELP

Avoids difficult work

No co-operation

Lack of interest

No initiative

Complaining

Making mistakes

Avoiding contact

No communication

Depressed

Poor quality

Argumentative

Unsafe working

Poor productivity

Delegating to others

Laziness

Absenteeism

Irritability

Blaming others

The most important sign to look for is a change in behavior or performance. For example, if a an employee who has always been well behaved, with a pleasant disposition suddenly becomes aggressive you can bet on him having some problem that needs counseling.

Counseling

On-the-job counseling is a process of talking about things that affect the performance of the work. It involves sitting down in some quiet place and getting job problems out in the open without hurting each other.

It’s all about talking, listening, and trying to understand the other person’s point of view. All supervisors are counselors whether they realize it or not. Sometimes a long heart-to-heart talk is needed to clear the air or a quick exchange will clear up a misunderstanding. Perhaps the supervisor does most of the talking; the next time it may be the other way around. However, counseling is more than a casual discussion resulting from an accidental encounter.

Counseling is a very effective management tool to increase productivity by solving problems and strengthening or repairing working relationships. Other kinds of problems of a personal or psychological nature should be avoided and left to professionals in that field.

On the Job training

Training is almost a natural human instinct. We all train our children without even thinking about it but when we have the job of training someone at work we find problems.

On the job training is often a one to one situation, usually involving the supervisor and one of the group. The supervisor uses the actual work as the training location, and works with the trainee to improve skills or introduce new tasks. This process is also referred to as coaching.

Advantages of on the job training

* It is cost effective

* It strengthens relationship within the group

* Feedback and support is easy

Nearly all the problems associated with on the job training are very simple to overcome. Like so many other parts of our work they require us to take a more systematic approach to the situation.

Most workers usually take pride in learning a new skill. The new skills gained are to our mutual benefit as it’s good for the worker to improve his future employment value and for us to have new capability in our groups. In addition, by making learning possible, you earn their respect and build enduring relationships.

The supervisor is frequently the only person in the organization that teaches the basic knowledge and the many key skills that the group needs to learn. On-the-job training should never stop.

Security Systems

July 24th, 2008

Almost every home in every neighborhood is a target for burglary, and it does not matter if you live in the city or the country. You need to take a gung ho approach to home safety, so that not only do you and your family derive protection, your valuables do as well. Let’s face it, you would probably be relieved if someone did break into your home and the worst thing that happened was that the burglar made off with some jewelry or other valuables. Home security systems divert burglars
who want to break in without complications. If you install even a basic alarm system, and display tags in your windows and doors that you have 24 hour protection, a would be thief will look to your neighbor’s house before taking the chance breaking into yours.

Don’t take the chance of becoming a victim of burglary, which is often accompanied by violence. Protect your family with a home security system that will safeguard your most precious valuables, the people you love. With all
the latest kidnappings and violent burglaries being reported, now is the time to protect your home and family, not later.

It’s no secret that crime is increasing every year and is invading what once were considered “safe communities.” As the following FBI report shows, crime is on the rise. Crime against property occurs on the average of 20 times a minute with an estimated $1,000 loss for each occurrence. Burglary is a crime of opportunity where entry is gained due to the carelessness of homeowners.

Single family homes are twice more likely to be burglarized than apartments. While receiving a lot of publicity when it happens, hotels and motels account for less than 3% of all burglaries. The most likely things to be stolen in a burglary are cash, small electronic equipment, home computers, cameras, jewelry, furs, tools and hand guns.

Few people really bother about security until something happens to them or a neighbor. The public’s complacent attitude is the burglar’s best friend and your worst enemy. There are many things the average person can do to make their home less of a target. This report will get you started on the right road. Remember, the two things a burglar fears most are being seen and having to take too much time to complete the crime.

While burglars typically “target” a home when no one is home, if you surprise one in the act, your chances of being injured are too high to attempt to intervene. A sobering statistic shows many homeowners attempting to defend (themselves, family members, or their property) with a weapon end up having it turned on them.

Fortunately, you can prevent this from ever happening to you and your family by having a home security system installed. A home safety system should include some type of fire detection, as well as protection against break-ins. Some systems even include medical assistance and remote assistance for the times when you need help and you are away from home.

Tips To Secure Your Home

There are some basic tips that you can follow to help prevent your home from being burglarized. First, make sure all doors and windows are locked at all times, even when you are home. Secure sliding glass doors with bars to block the closed door, and do the same for basement windows and garage doors. Install peepholes in doors so that you never have to open the door blindly.

There are so many safeguards you can take to insure that you don’t become a victim of burglary and/or violent crime.

Eavesdropping and Counter-Measures: Technology and Techniques

July 24th, 2008

You need to know how to protect yourself, since your security department or
any consultant may not be truly aware of these threats and therefore not
dependable. Since September 11th, a number of businesses entered the security field with little to no knowledge of the trade itself; only of its profit potential. Even outfits that have been around for some time and well-established have not been able to stay current with the latest innovations.

Realistically, viewing your threat level has to be considered since everyone
should expect some sort of impending privacy issue no matter how small. Thanks
largely to the Internet you can arm yourself with much of the knowledge and
equipment that the so-called experts use. If a respected agent of computer crimes
for the Secret Service in NYC had his T-Mobile Sidekick hacked, who knows what else
happens out there to others in any business.

Realistically, viewing your threat level has to be considered since everyone
should expect some sort of impending privacy issue no matter how small. Thanks
largely to the Internet you can arm yourself with much of the knowledge and
equipment that the so-called experts use. If a respected agent of computer crimes
for the Secret Service in NYC had his T-Mobile Sidekick hacked, who knows what
else happens out there to others in any business.

We’ll start acoustic ducting evaluation is the inspection of air ducts, baseboard
heaters, coffee rooms, lounges, bathrooms or any way the architecture of a building
can transfer sound. A simple example is to put your ear to a wall and listen.

Basically anything that requires the use of the naked ear is called an acoustic
bug. Softer surfaces can help muffle sounds but there are more efficient means out
there. So be aware that the way an office site is designed can act as a conduit for
conversations. Also, be aware of any changes can have adverse affects. Simply
playing music can do wonders for masking conversations.

Inspection of telephone equipment and wiring is called line analysis. This is
trickier than it seems since sometimes a possible weakness has an actual purpose to
the telecommunication system. Especially if it requires constant maintenance and
software upgrades.

All instruments should be opened and inspected. Ideally they should be
compared with a known safe phone or device. If you’re not sure, just remove that
piece of loose components and wiring and see if the phone still works. The wiring
can be modified in a switch within the handset that essentially turns it into a
microphone. If you bypass this hook switch, you can listen in from anywhere on the
landline. Technical
equipment won’t be able to detect this. Time Domain Reflectometry is the sending
of a pulse down a telephone line. If there is some sort of disruption; a wall outlet or
wiretap; a portion of the pulse will be
sent back to the device called a Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR). Then the time
difference between the reflection and the continuous run is measured. This helps in
determining the distance to the anomaly.

These devices can perform all sorts of diagnostics including mapping a wire
network. That can be useful in locating a hidden phone. Hidden phones have several
obvious uses such as making long distance phone calls to being placed in an office
across the street to receive betting requests by bookies; a practice called back
strapping. If you open up the modular jacks where you connect your phone, you’ll
usually see four wires. In most cases only two wires are connected; commonly
known as ring and tip. If you see all four connected, be aware that is not usually
consistent for most wiring situations, especially in homes. The other two wires
could be used for a bugging device.

For instance, the microphone you use in a voice recorder can be cut in half.
Connect the mike head to one set of unused wires anywhere on the phone wire.
Then, so long as there are no breaks in the wire, connect the other end to the jack
that connects to your recorder. Now place your recorder to be VOX (voice) activated
and now you have an extremely reliable bug. By the way, this should be manually
inspected for since using a specialized bug detector may see nothing wrong or
inconsistent. A bug such as this that connects to a wire is called a direct tap.

The other general type is called an inductive tap. This is when an instrument is
outside a wire but can still distinguish what’s transacting over a wire. They are
harder to detect since they don’t draw power from the line such a standard
telephone would. These are referred to as snuffle bugs. A simple probe used in
hunting wire signals has a speaker, which can display sounds. By
accident one day I was working on an apartment intercom system while using a
probe. I could hear conversations throughout the building quite clearly just
through the intercom boxes mounted on walls from the master unit in the
basement.

If you’re using wireless headsets or cordless phones, the radio signals can be
intercepted. A cordless phone acts like a radio, but depending on the frequency and
a few other factors, can make interception extremely difficult. With some
manufacturers, you can buy the same model as your neighbors or the office and
have it join their phone system. Double check Caller ID boxes to see if they also
record numbers dialed besides obviously those being received. If you’re using VOIP
(Voice Over IP), remember that calls can be recorded in a fashion identical to
intercepting data between two computers.

These packets of data can reassemble an audio file. Obviously electronic
devices possess semiconductor components such as diodes, resistors and such. The
method to hunt for these components is called Non-Linear Junction Detection
(NLJD). The NLJD unit emits a radio signal while listening for the return signal from
an electronic device. This becomes very useful when a bug is embedded in a picture
frame or wall. The eavesdropping device doesn’t have to be active for it to be
discovered. If a device is active and transmitting wirelessly (or even on a wire), you
can detect it with a Radio Frequency Spectrum Analyzer. Depending on the detection
device used, you can determine whether voice, data or video is being sent, and
possibly listen to the data. Try to use different size antennas or buy one that
collapses. Different frequencies can be detected more efficiently by using various
sizes. The use of filters with antennas can also help pinpoint devices on specific
frequencies.

Electronics such as computers, FAX machines and especially CRT monitors can
radiate electromagnetic signals or pulses that can be received by other equipment.
This is known TEMPEST. One way to complicate the surveillance of this is to use
certain fonts and line walls or equipment with different gauges of copper mesh wire.
You can further enhance this posture by using special paints, which block radio
transmissions.

Radio waves will look for a leak or break, so be careful of defensive
applications. One-way window tints can help in blocking signals. Since an
electronic device could generate some heat they can be detected in another way.
The use of a thermal imagery device can detect and actually see minute amounts of
heat radiated for your viewing. You can hide the heat signatures by using creams or
neoprene. Technology exists to collect information from blinking LEDs of modems,
routers, print servers and similar devices. You can only see some general blinking
but with the use of properly tuned optics, filters, oscilloscopes and good timing you
can discern much more. One of the LEDs on your keyboard can be altered to blink
while you are typing in a fashion similar to Morse Code. You can also use a tap in
the keyboard that sends out radio waves again similar to Morse Code and no anti-
virus software will ever be able to find it. Even when a CRT computer monitor is
facing a wall the light can be in a sense read by its flickering emanations from some
distance. A good defensive measure is to buy new LCD flat panel types.

Another approach to attacking FAX machines is to simply record the noises it
makes and play it back to another machine. I used to do this for a client so they
could keep a record of all the faxes they made and received. There are creative and
potentially illegal defenses against wiretappers and Peeping Toms. One is to
transmit an extremely high pitch down the wire, thereby rupturing the listener’s
eardrums. I knew someone who once sent a powerful electrical spike down his
phone wire thereby destroying his divorced wife’s recorder.

By the way, this leads to another topic-expect the device to be discovered
someday. Don’t leave your fingerprints on it. He found it and had it dusted, thereby
producing some prints. My friend used this as leverage against the Private
Investigator that planted it. Advice to Private Investigators, a word to the wise: if you
do this part-time, hire someone who does this full-time. This P.I. lost his license
and almost went to jail. The lawyer who recommended him got into a lot of trouble
as well. He received some unwanted attention from the Feds because of his
telephone dealings went across state lines and also happened to involve the Post
Office.

There is another budding field related to this topic called Protective
Intelligence. Currently there are only a few experts who do this kind of work.

A laser or an infrared beam can be used at a considerable distance from a
target building. Conversational sounds can vibrate unto solid objects such as
windows. The beam’s reflection varies in relation to the movement to the window,
which is received and converted back into something audible. To mask the sounds,
you could attach a vibrating device (basically an altered electric razor) to the
window.

Of course if the window is open, then a laser can target another object instead
of the window. A beam of light or laser can be directed to go through a window
onto a solid object thereby nullifying such defensive measures again. Generally you
really can’t detect such attacks unless the laser, infrared or light beam is being used
that moment. Certain materials can be used to detect IR emissions, as well as the
use of passive night vision gear. Certain fabrics or even a curtain may actually show
the spot where a beam of light or laser is being focused. Unless the room is dusty or
you have an artificial can smoke, you can follow the beam up to a point and
guesstimate it’s location. One type of optical bug is an infrared transmitter. When
placed in the area of interest for transmission of the conversation to an infrared
receiver which will then translate the conversation into an audible format.

Many of these same procedures used can be applied to locating hidden
cameras. A relatively new device uses a series of lasers to seek out optics. This was
originally intended to locate snipers by bodyguards.

I have listed the techniques, counter-measures and then the counter to the
counter-measures to prevent any false sense of security. Usually constant vigilance
is your best weapon besides knowing what to look for. Even if you find a “bug
sweeper” with good credentials, certifications and experience, ask them detailed
questions. Not just to test them but also for your own peace-of-mind. This makes
our job easier and we appreciate greatly when dealing with knowledgeable
customers.

I Hate High Gasoline Prices for My SUV

July 23rd, 2008

Are you sick and tired of these high oil prices and realize, as Hurricane Season heats up they will even go higher? Then what? Well, then we will all be paying more you see? What can we do? Well, maybe a bunch of you can get together and start your own oil company and then sell for less.

Sure and hey here is a synopsis of how you could do this once you get some synergy and huge numbers of people to fund the idea. Humor me for moment, as your story would go something like this: “The team makes business plans and gets billions in private funding, hit roadblock after roadblock from government rules and lawyer costs mount in the multi-millions. The world is in shambles as they watch each night on TV, Oil Prices skyrocket, Mexico has an Earthquake, illegal aliens flood US, Iran goes to war with Israel, China Take Taiwan back as US stands down, Hurricane Season, Typhoons, Indonesia earthquakes and civil unrest.”

Indeed and this is exactly what you would be dealing with too, of course you would find yourself with high enough oil prices that you could indeed get a comfortable return on investment if you started your own Ethanol or Oil Company.

And once you did all that work then you could charge any amount you wanted too and you would not have to say anymore; “I Hate High Gasoline Prices for My SUV” because you would own the oil company and you could lower prices for me too okay? Sure you would. Consider this in 2006.

How to Prevent Presentation and Speaking Disasters

July 21st, 2008

I just got back from my whirlwind speaking engagements and it occurred to me that you might be interested in these recent experiences (especially since speaking in the number one way to increase to raise your visibility and credibility in the industry). In a matter of two weeks, I spoke at two different conferences. Although the topic was the same the audience for each was different.

In Florida I was the first speaker at the Prestige Products Conference. Boy, was I nervous.I was using a new and untested presentation and was the first guinea pig on the stage. I checked my PowerPoint beforehand (and carried two back-up copies) and was leery of the ever waiting glitches in presentations. Everything went well and I finished exactly within the 45 minute time period. This is something you can’t always gauge even with practice. If you get nervous and speak fast, it will shorten your speaking time. Then this leaves dead time before the next speaker and it makes you look like an amateur.

The group was great. The asked loads of question and connected with me and my topic. I got ton of business cards from members of the audience who wanted a copy of the entire of the presentation. I made a point of speaking to everyone too and asked their opinion of the other presentations.

The second gig was very different. I was the last speaker on the first day’s session. I worked my self into a frenzy after watching Hallmark, Kraft Foods and Sherwin Williams’s present programs with all kinds of special effects including video clips. Yikes, here I was with my simple PowerPoint presentation competing for attention at the end of a long day.

By this time I was a wreck, I knew my stuff was good from the previous week’s experience, but what about the “show”? I did a quick once over of my slides at the break and everything looked in order. When I got up finally to speak, after a very technical tedious program, I relaxed a little. It was really hard to read such a large audience, where they tired, bored and seemingly uninterested. I panicked when my second speech was missing two slides which I “ad libbed” and I had no bells and whistles to keep them awake. Surprise! Again, I got lots of questions and business cards even without the special effects.

The next day I spoke to a lot of the attendees about the previous day’s programs. To my amazement most felt “the big names presentations” were dull, canned or not really relevant to what they were looking for. I even got a terrific testimonial from one attendee about how I had “great takeaways” of information.

So why am I telling you all of this? It’s not the “name” of the company or the special effects that makes the presentation or the information of value, it’s what the attendees learn and hear from you that makes your presentation a success. Connect with your audience by understanding why they are there in the first place. Don’t get caught up in bells and whistles or special effects that detract from the “substance” of your program. If the material is good, your presentation will be too, even if there are a few hitches in it. Speakers are not “gods” to be worshiped from afar. Those who connect with their audience though solid content and information will be remembered long after the “fancy” presentations fade.

Mountain Walking in Ireland

July 16th, 2008

Ireland is not famous for high mountains, and in fact the tallest mountain in Ireland stands just over 1000m high. Compared to other countries, this might seem a paltry figure, but Ireland has a lot to offer mountain walkers who visit Ireland. Below I look at the highest mountains in each of the four provinces in Ireland.

Munster

Carrauntoohil (Corran Tuathail in Irish), Co Kerry which forms part of MacGillycuddy’s Reeks stands at 1039 meters high and is not just the tallest mountain in Munster, but also the tallest mountain in Ireland. The views from top of this mountain are spectacular, looking out over Hags Glen and Co. Kerry. This is not the safest mountain in Ireland to climb. Most people climb the mountain via the Devil’s Ladder which can only be described as dangerous. The Devil’s Ladder is made up of loose rocks and rises at a steep angle. Once you reach the top of the Devil’s Ladder, there is a further stretch to climb to the peak of the mountain which is marked by a cross.

Connaught

Mweelrea (Cnoc Maol Réidh, bald grey hill in Irish) is the tallest mountain in Connaught, standing just over 800 meters. It is situated beside the coastline of Mayo which is famous for its beauty. From the top of the mountain you look over Clew Bay and the numerous Islands that litter the seascape. Often described as one of the great walks in Ireland, Mweelrea is a difficult mountain that asks many questions of those who climb it.

Ulster

Slieve Donard meaning Sliabh Domengard in Irish or Donard Mountain, is the tallest mountain in Ulster, peaking at 850 meters. Standing next to the picturesque seaside town of Newcastle, Slieve Donard is an interesting climb, not only because of the spectacular views it offers up to those who make the effort, but because of the climb itself. The trek up the mountain is marked out with a rocky path, including steps up the mountain itself. When you reach the saddle, turn left and follow the Mourne Wall to the top of the mountain. This wall can provide great shelter from wind and rain on a cold day.

Leinster

Lugnaquilla is the highest mountain in Leinster, and many say is the most difficult of all the mountains in Ireland. From the base and Murphy’s Glen of the Imall Pub, you will gain over 700 meters to the top. The Mountain is covered in grass and a vague path worn into the mountain side marks the path to the top. It is not unusual to see wild deer here, so keep an eye out. The mountain offers up spectacular views over County Kildare after you get passed the first and toughest incline. If you are lucky enough to climb Lugnaquilla on a cloudless days, be prepared for one of the most spectacular vistas in Ireland.
