Massive New Project Near Canary Wharf

June 8th, 2009

The area near Canary Wharf is all set to get a facelift, with some major development plans being submitted to the Tower Hamlets Council.

The project has been planned by a joint venture between some well known names – Wood Wharf, Canary Wharf Group, Ballymore Properties, and British Waterways. It has been revealed that the project includes six commercial and six residential blocks. This would translate to about 5 million sq ft of office and desk space and 1700 houses. The builders have also announced that at least 35 percent of the houses would come under the affordable bracket.

The two major buildings of the project have been named as W01 and W02-03. The first one, which will be 134m high and make available about 911,000 sq ft of space, will have Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates as architects. The second one is a much bigger undertaking. It will be 194m tall and will offer 1.6 million sq ft of space. Pelli Clarke Pelli have been selected as architects for the second one. Interestingly, Pelli Clarke Pelli were also the architects for One Canada Square, which is arguably the most prominent building in Canary Wharf business district.

The new project will offer all necessary facilities to residents and guests. There will be a clinic, a park along the river, a riverside hotel, footpaths and cycle paths, and an all new canal. Moreover, a high street will be built in the area, which will be a great opportunity for the local traders. The street will also have restaurants, pubs, cafes etc. The project is likely to take at least 10 years to complete, and the work has been divided into 4 phases.
