Opponents’ Outs
The term “outs” in online poker games refers to the number of cards a player needs to complete to a winning hand. For instance, with four cards to a flush, there are nine other cards of that suit in the deck, so the player has nine outs. When you have a pair, there are only two outs to complete to trips.
The more outs an online poker player has, the better the chances are of hitting the hand. When you have to make a decision about whether to call a bet, then you have to consider your outs and compare that to how much is in the pot and its ratio to the bet. If the pot is a smaller ratio to the bet than the number of outs, i.e. four outs which is a 11-1 ratio to win a pot that only pays 5 times the bet, then the pot odds are unfavorable.
When you are drawing for hand with multiple online poker players still remaining in the pot, then understand there are a lot of outs going against you too. If you’ve got top pair on the flop, but there are flushed and straightening cards on the board, with several players remaining in the pot, then even if you’ve hit Aces, your opponents have many outs to beat your high pair. You very few – two more Aces, which is 23-1. And some of your outs to pair your kicker may improve an opponent’s hand by completing a straight or flush.
